Following last year’s hugely popular Spotlight on Houston, HCAF’s Spotlight on Texas will be a four-day, post-fest experience, November 17-20, celebrating the vitality of film production throughout the state. All shows are at 7:00 p.m. in Sundance Cinemas, and most will be accompanied by guest directors.
Monday, November 17
Directed by Austin-based Eric Hueber and produced by Houston’s Remy Carter, Flutter is a special presentation of the Austin Film Festival. With a deeply felt performance form Lindsay Pulsipher, Flutter delicately explores a mother’s struggle to protect and love her son through poverty, isolation, and incarceration.
Tuesday, November 18
A vibrant and truly hilarious documentary, Tomato Republic follows a heated mayoral race in the crumbling town of Jacksonville, better known as the Tomato Capital of Texas. Skip Hollingsworth of Texas Monthly calls the film “a marvel… By the end of the movie, I was just shaking my head in wonder.”
Wednesday, November 19
The Texas Filmmakers Showcase is an annual compilation of the best Texas short films and videos, selected by a professional jury and organized by The Houston Film Commission.
Thursday, November 20
Enlisting an ensemble of neighbors and homeless friends, Giuseppe Andrews shot his movies in the Ventura, California trailer park where he grew up, before moving to his current base in Austin. Adam Rifkin’s tribute to the no-budget filmmaker and his troupe of collaborators makes for a wildly entertaining ride.
