The City of Your Final Destination
WITH GUEST DIRECTOR JAMES IVORY
From award-winning director James Ivory comes the impassioned tale of an Iranian-born doctoral student, Omar, who must gain permission from the family of Jules Gund, a Latin American writer who has committed suicide, to write Gund’s authorized biography. In the view of Omar’s forceful girlfriend, his future depends on writing the book. When the Gund family refuses permission, he must fly to South America to change their minds.
Omar must convince three strong personalities who were close to Gund — his gay twin brother played by Anthony Hopkins, his bitter widow played by Laura Linney, and his younger mistress, Arden, played by Charlotte Gainsbourg, all living in close quarters on Gund’s crumbling estate. Passions begin to stir between Omar and Arden, interrupted by a surprise visit from Omar’s girlfriend.
Based on Peter Cameron’s novel of the same name, the film explores the random nature of love and the ways in which we drift through or take charge of our lives. According to Pete Hammond, writing for Backstage: “With a fine literate script by Ruth Prawer Jhabvala and immaculate direction from James Ivory, The City of Your Final Destination is a dream actors’ showcase… This is the rare film these days that favors words over actions… Ivory, in his remarkable 24th collaboration with Jhabvala, makes the material cinematic and intriguing.”
