Once Upon A Time Veronica
WITH GUEST DIRECTOR MARCELO GOMES
Director Marcelo Gomes creates a fairy tale in reverse with this stylishly crafted sketch of a young woman’s life. Veronica, fresh out of medical school, is full of doubts about her ability to cope with commitment or her career choices. There are no fairy godmothers, no weddings, no dreams, and no easy answers. Veronica must face the pain of the real world and the possibility of feeling empty.
The Hollywood Reporter’s Neil Young stated, “Brazil’s Marcelo Gomes leaps to the front rank of South American filmmakers with his sophomore feature, Once Upon a Time Veronica, a superbly sensual character study… built around a stunning central performance by Hermila Guedes.” The film won five major awards at Brazil’s national film festival in Brasilia and a special mention in the Horizontes Latinos section at San Sebastian.
“Suitably enough, Mr. Gomes and his cinematographer, Mauro Pinheiro Jr., employ a lovely, diffuse approach to light and bodies that feels at once sensual and slightly buffered from that sensuality… Mr. Gomes remains laudably faithful to his character.” —Nicolas Rapold, The New York Times
