Exposed

WITH GUEST FILMMAKER BETH B and KOOMAH

Run Time: 77 mins USA Language: English

Synopsis

Pioneering New York “No Wave” underground filmmaker and visual artist Beth B reveals a secret world where cutting-edge performers take hold of the taboo art form Burlesque and drive it to extremes. It’s satire. It’s parody. It’s a populist blend of art and entertainment that gives new meaning to the word “transgression.” Above all, it is mind-blowing fun and a fascinating depiction of personal liberation through art.

Exposed looks at eight boundary-breaking New York burlesque stars who use their nakedness to transport us beyond the last sexual and social taboos. These artists combine politics, satire, and physical comedy to challenge the audience’s notions of gender identity, disability, sexuality and the very concept of “normal.” Through them, we get to examine our own inhibitions. The film creates a unique perspective, taking the audience into the clubs and other hidden spaces where these artists perform.

Hosting tonight’s event will be Koomah,  an intersex bodied trans/queer artist, performer, filmmaker, and part-time hermaphrodite unicorn who also performs burlesque under the moniker ‘Mallé FeMallé, the genderf*ck royale’. Koomah has performed, showcased artworks, and screened films internationally.

The performance footage is indeed eye-popping, though the greatest jolt comes from seeing these larger-than-life iconoclasts stripped of their makeup and armor-like personas.
