Dior and I
WITH GUEST DIRECTOR FRÉDÉRIC TCHENG AND LYNN WYATT
Frédéric Tcheng co-directed the closing night film of the 2012 Houston Cinema Arts Festival, Diana Vreeland: The Eye Has to Travel. Lynn Wyatt, who memorably interviewed director Lisa Vreeland that night, will return for a discussion with Tcheng on his terrific new high-fashion feature, Dior and I. A privileged glimpse into the initiation of artistic director Raf Simons as he produced his first haute couture collection for the House of Dior, Frederic Tcheng’sfilm is a sweeping love letter to the storied design house.
“If there’s ever been a show that the fashion world has waited with absolute bated breath to see, it’s this one: Raf Simons’ debut for Christian Dior,” wrote Vogue’s Jessica Bumpus in July 2012. Melding the everyday, pressure-filled components of fashion with echoes from the iconic brand’s past, the film pays homage to the talented seamstresses and other collaborators who must create a full collection in only eight weeks.
“Tcheng acts less like a fly on the wall at the House of Dior and more like a silkworm creating the threads. So intimate is his camera that the viewer can feel the fabric of the dresses being made,” writes Gary M. Kramer in Indiewire. “I found myself trying to conjure this ghost of Christian Dior,” Tcheng told The Hollywood Reporter, “creating a more immersive experience for the viewer.”
