Synopsis

Contemporary Color is a performance event at Brooklyn’s Barclays Center inspired by the phenomenon of color guard, colloquially known as “the sport of the arts.” Conceived by the legendary David Byrne, the film is a wildly colorful ride into a relatively unknown world.

Byrne recruited cutting-edge performers including the likes of St. Vincent, Nelly Furtado, Money Mark and Ad-Rock, Merrill Garbus, Zola Jesus, and Devonté Hynes of Blood Orange to collaborate on original pieces with ten of the country’s elite color guard teams – the flag and sabre- flipping, sequin-studded crème de la crème of the sport. Having completed an Americana trilogy of observational documentaries (Western, Tchoupitoulas, 45365), filmmakers Bill and Turner Ross capture not only highlights of the Barclays Center performances but the wonder and excitement of both the students and the musicians involved in an unforgettable collaboration. Sync steps with these talented young students and musical luminaries for a bacchanalia of beats, sabre-spinning and glitter cannons!

“Contemporary Color” captures the essence of the event in question with expert craftsmanship, and the filmmaking prowess doesn’t overwhelm the show….The explosive jubilance enhances the impression of a utopian ideal — pure creativity.
