Clouds of Sils Maria
Directed by Oliver Assayas and starring Juliette Binoche, and Kristen Stewart
Celebrated French director Olivier Assayas thrills with this rich psychological study of an aging star. At the peak of her international career, Maria Enders, played exquisitely by Juliette Binoche, is asked to perform in a revival of the play that made her famous 20 years ago. Back then she played the role of Sigrid, an alluring young girl who disarms and eventually drives her boss Helena to suicide. Now she is asked to step into the other role, that of the older Helena.
She departs with her assistant (Kristen Stewart) to rehearse in Sils Maria, a remote region of the Alps. Stewart is spectacular in the part, as Diego Costa wrote in Slant Magazine: “The pleasure in watching the film becomes a linguistic one as Juliette Binoche and Kristen Stewart masterfully sharpen their words and hurl them at each other like projectiles out of a blowpipe.” Chloë Grace Moretz plays the young Hollywood starlet who takes on the role of Sigrid, thrusting Maria face to face with, in essence, an unsettling reflection of herself.
Eric Kohn of Indiewire comments: “Ultimately, the ideas in Clouds of Sils Maria point to the tragedy of talent losing its currency in an ever-changing marketplace… That takeaway makes Clouds of Sils Mariainto an argument for its own existence: Real environments and intelligent exchanges tell better stories than any modicum of escapism.”
