A Lesson Before Dying
Starring Don Cheadle, Cicely Tyson, and Mekhi Phifer
Based on the New York Times bestselling novel, A Lesson Before Dying stars Don Cheadle and Cicely Tyson, who both received Emmy nominations for their performances. This skillfully wrought film, directed by Joseph Sargent, tells the story of Grant Wiggins, an African American man who has become resigned to racial injustice in the 1940s South. After graduating from college, Wiggins comes home to teach in the same one-room school of his youth.
Struggling to make a difference in an oppressive time and place, he is called upon to visit the local prison. There, he meets a simple man who has been wrongly convicted of murder and sentenced to death. It falls upon Wiggins to enrich the man’s life, a life he cannot save.
The film won two Primetime Emmy Awards as Outstanding Made for Television Movie and for Outstanding Writing for a Miniseries or Movie. It is being presented in collaboration with the University of Houston Downtown from the best available DVD source.
This presentation has been sponsored by a grant obtained by the University of Houston-Downtown from the National Endowment for the Arts Big Read Program. This free admission screening is one of many events during Houston Citizenship Month.
